A.L. Carter

January 12, 1932 — October 11, 2008

Mr. A.L. Carter died October 11, 2008 in La Porte, Indiana. He was born in Bloomington, Indiana on January 12, 1932 to Mr. O.A. and Vera Kern Carter. He has been a resident of La Crosse for 12 years and served on the Town Planning Commission.

He graduated from Bloomington High School and was selected for the Associated Press Indiana All State
football team in l949. He did his undergraduate work at University of Indianapolis, captained the football team to an undefeated season and was on the Associated Press Little All-American College team in l953. In 2001 he was inducted into the University of Indianapolis Athletic Hall of Fame. His Master’s degree in Education and Administration was from Butler University and his Post Graduate work at Ball State University.

Carter has been in School Administration most of his life as Coach, Teacher, Guidance Director, Curriculum Developer, and Principal in Secondary Schools in Indiana. He was a Connersville City Councilman and Council president for two years, president of the Salvation Army Board and a member of the Lion’s Club. He was a Testing Consultant for Harcourt and Brace and was the Guidance Director for the La Crosse School System until his retirement. He designed and built custom furniture and was one of only three Americans who have become members of England’s 12th Century Artisan’s Guild of Master Wood Craftsman. He continued to teach fellow artisans as well as design and build custom furniture for the last l0 years.

In 1996 he married Susan Emmert Mitchell. They have enjoyed traveling, fishing, reading, family, working with wood, and their Iris and Lily gardens. Family and friends are the appreciative recipients of his division of roots, bulbs and corms each spring.

Mr. Carter is survived by his wife, Susan , his sister and brother-in-law, Kitty and Dr. William Wolf of La Porte, nieces, Mina Wolf of Tucson, Dr. Lovera (Dr.David) Miller, Lana (Mark) Witbeck, and Lisa (Scott) Smithson and nephew Dr. Bill (Dr. Renee) Wolf of La Porte and 10 grand-nieces and nephews.
Step-daughters Linda (Mike) Noonan of Tennesee and Carol Mitchell of Chesterton, 5 step-grandchildren and 6 step- great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, James, and his two sons, Michael and Brad.

There will be a Memorial Service Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. in the Sanctuary of the Adventist Church on Boyd Blvd. in La Porte with Pastor Eric Freking. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. Please join the family for Tea in Fellowship Hall following the Memorial Service .
