Allene A. (Andrews) Welkie, 101, of Settlers Place, La Porte, IN, passed away on Sunday, December 5, 2021.
The oldest of four children, she was born on October 8, 1920 to Clyde E. and Vera (Dye ) Andrews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Clyde Elton Andrews of Michigan City, IN and Dr. Edwin Andrews of Rexford, NY; sister, Eva Jane Szoke of Valparaiso, IN; nephew, Stephen Andrews of NY; brother-in-law, Sandor Szoke; and sister-in-law, Lois (Clyde Elton) Andrews of Michigan City, IN.
Allene was a 1938 graduate of Union Mills High School and a 1939 graduate of La Porte Business School. She began working at La Porte Production Credit Association where she had a distinguished career and retired after serving for 46 years on January 1, 1986. She started a second career after retiring as a model for The Little House dress shop at age 65 until she was 82 years old.
Allene was a 50 plus year member of The Presbyterian Church of La Porte, serving as a Deacon and Elder as well as teaching Sunday School. Music was a big part of her life. She was a member of the choir, directed the children's choir, and took part in two Sound of Hope trips to Europe.
Surviving are her sister-in-law, Bev Andrews of NY; nieces, Susan (Kelly) McKay of WI, Beth (Kevin) Peters of Crown Point, and Jennifer (John) McKenna of Scotia, NY; great-nephews, Jackson Peters, Roenick Peters, and Tom McKenna; great-nieces, Katie McCarthy, Kerry McCarthy and Abigail McKenna; cousins, Jim Carpenter and family, Billie and George Callas and family, and Jim and Mercedes Brashear and family.
Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Gathering will take place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, June 24, 2022 at The Presbyterian Church of La Porte, 307 Kingsbury Ave, La Porte with inurnment to follow at 4 p.m. at The Presbyterian Church of La Porte Columbarium.
