Betty Mae Hostetler, 93, passed away on Thursday, September 29, 2016 surrounded by family.
Betty was born on May 7, 1923 in Wanatah, IN, as the daughter of Leland "Glen" and Mae (Kuss) Goodwin. She was preceded by her parents; husband, Orla; siblings, Clarence (Nona) Goodwin, Maurice (Mavis) Goodwin, Cecil Goodwin, Harold Goodwin and Gladys (Wayne) Rice. Surviving are her daughter, Jacki (Bob) Fryer; granddaughters, Jami Fryer, Kelli (Sam) Tanger, Courtni (Doug) Meyers, and Abbi Fryer; great-granddaughter, Mae Tanger; siblings, Wilbur Goodwin and Ron (Shirley) Goodwin; and sisters-in-law, June, Donna, and Joan Goodwin.
Betty Mae was a devoted Christian and was a member of Lamb's Chapel. She spent several years teaching various grades at South Central and invested in many children's lives. She had several admirable qualities. She was the sweetest person you would ever meet, tough as nails, patient, never complained, selfless, kind and witty. Her smile lit up a room and she was so grateful for everything she had.
She was married to her husband, Orla, for 55 years before he passed away in 2004. She truly lived out the vows in sickness and in health. She took care of Orla tirelessly and selflessly for eight years when he became ill. Betty lit up when talking about her husband and their memories, and she missed him dearly.
Betty was the second-born child of eight children. To Betty, family was everything. She invested her love, energy and time into her brothers, sister, nieces and nephews. She truly enjoyed visiting with them all.
She hosted weekly homemade Sunday dinners after church for her family made with great care and were absolutely delicious. Betty loved her only daughter, Jacki, and son-in-law, Bob deeply. She treasured each family member, especially her four granddaughters who adored her as well. Each granddaughter has beautiful and unique memories with her to fill thousands of pages. Betty Mae recently became a great-grandmother to Mae Tanger, who was named after her. It was a gift to be able to see her hold her great-granddaughter, and she loved every minute of that new role. Betty loved her family with all of her heart.
To know Betty was an honor and a privilege. She will be missed greatly, but we rejoice in the fact that we will see her again.
