C. Eugene "Gene" Harper, age 91, of La Porte, IN passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at home. He was born on January 18, 1925 in South Bend, IN to Clem Eugene and Lucy Christina Koehler Harper. On December 5, 1981 in La Porte, IN, he married Cynthia Lynn Marsch who preceded him in death on October 11, 2014.
Surviving are his son, Ronald (Laura) Harper of Mishawaka; grandchildren, Christopher and Karyn Harper; sister-in-law, Debbie (Sam) Cardinale of La Porte; nieces and nephews, Judy, Sharon, Doug, Christy, Matt, and Tone; and his cats, Holly and Hope. He was preceded by his parents and his wife.
Gene served his country honorably as an US Army Sergeant during WW II and was stationed in Hawaii. He worked as a computer operator at Whirlpool Corporation until his retirement. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in La Porte. Together with his wife, Cynthia he traveled the world, taking numerous cruises and visiting many places such as the Holy Land, Alaska, and Hawaii. Gene also enjoyed gardening, watching old westerns, and most of all, enjoying time with his family and friends.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 6 PM on Friday, December 9, 2016 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center. Rev. Tracey Bright will officiate.
Family and friends will be received from 4-6 PM prior to the service on Friday, December 9, 2016 at the funeral home.
A private burial will take place at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola, IN.
Memorial donations may be made to Dune's Hospice, 4711 Evans Avenue, Valparaiso, IN 46383.
Gene has now completed his circle of life and will forever be grateful for the long term care provided by his grandson, Christopher, son, Ronald, caregiver, Jody Stover; and the wonderful staff at Dune's Hospice, especially her nurses Vicki and Michelle.
