Carolyn Jane (Whitcomb) Barr, of La Porte, IN passed away at Golden Living Center in La Porte at the age of 85. She was born on February 18, 1927 the daughter of the late Roscoe Leonard and Beulah (Record) Whitcomb in Michigantown, IN. On October 28, 1951 she married Robert Martin Barr at the Michigantown Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on November 18, 2008.
She is survived by her sons, Harold (Susan) Barr, Martin (Marsha) Barr, and Ralph (Diane) Barr, all of La Porte; grandchildren; Tonya (Edward) Treble of New York City, Evan Barr of LaPorte, Erin Barr of La Porte, Jane Barr of Boston, Mass., Bennett Barr of La Porte, Kelly Barr of LaPorte; two great grandchildren, Breyon M. Wilson, Jr. and Braxton M. Wilson of LaPorte; and one brother, Tommy (Laurenda) Whitcomb of Frankfort, IN; one niece and two nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and a son, Randy Lee Barr who passed away on August 25, 2009.
Carolyn grew up on a farm in Clinton Co., IN and graduated from Michigantown High School in 1945. She met her husband, Bob, at a Rural Youth social gathering. In her early adult years she was a clerk in a gift shop and a bookkeeper for a bank. Later she was a full time homemaker, mother, and grandmother. When her sons were young she was an assistant Cub Scout Den Mother. When her grandchildren were young, their yearly tradition was to make Christmas ornaments and decorate Christmas cookies with their Grandma. She had been a member of the Methodist Church in Michigantown and later the Presbyterian Church of La Porte. She had also been a member of the Charm & Chatter Homemakers Club and the Eastern Star.
Her hobbies were baking and traveling. She and her husband were fortunate to travel over the years to Hawaii, St. Kits, Germany, and many other places, including the Calvary Stampede in Canada. Through these trips they made many lasting friendships.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Cutler Funeral Home & Cremation Center at 10 AM on Wednesday December 12, 2012 with Pastor Sally Wicks officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery in La Porte.
Family and friends will be received from 5-8 PM on Tuesday December 11, 2012 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Salvation Army of La Porte, 3240 Monroe Street; La Porte, IN 46350 or the Presbyterian Church Of La Porte, 307 Kingsbury Ave; La Porte, IN 46350.
