Catherine I. Theis, 94 years old of Walkerton, IN, passed away on Sunday, December 16, 2012 at Fountainview Terrace in LaPorte, IN.
She was born October 2, 1918 in Union Township, St. Joseph County, daughter of the late Irvin E. and Dorothy (Schafer) Annis.
Catherine was a graduate of Madison Township High School and also attended Manchester College and graduated from Bethel College. She worked as a teacher for over 35 years, teaching at Center School in South Bend from 1939-1942, Mill Creek School from 1943- 1946, Grovertown School from 1953 - 1954, Mill Creek School from 1955-1956 and North Liberty from 1957 - 1979. Catherine was a member of the Walkerton Presbyterian Church where she served as Sunday School Teacher, Bible School Teacher and Deacon. She also belonged to the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, Business Woman's Association of Walkerton, DAR and St. Joseph County Retired Teachers Association. She received many awards for her art work. She traveled the world with her life-long friend, Jean Cole. She also enjoyed playing cards with friends.
She was married to Lester A. Theis who preceded her in death.
Surviving are her daughter, Kathy S. Matz of LaPorte, IN; nieces, Marolyn Klockow of South Bend, IN., Carolyn Hunt of Mill Creek , IN., Jody Barr, Montgomery, AL; nephews, Mike Annis, AL., Jim Annis, AL; grandchildren, Michelle A. Matz-Moreno of Mishawaka, IN., Kimberly S. Matz-Markouzis of Henderson, NV., Ysabella Moreno,Vaughn Moreno and Alexander Markouzis.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lester A. Theis; 2 Brothers, Wilbur and Myron Annis; and sisters-in-law, Bernice Hunt, Eleanor Defnet and Bernice Annis.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, December 20, 2012 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Rev. Sally Wicks officiating.
A time of visitation will be held from 3-7 PM on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 and from 9 AM until the time of service on Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery.
