Chester A. Grys

July 11, 1937 — December 6, 2003

Chester A. Grys, 66, LaPorte, died of natural causes at 12:04 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 6, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.

The funeral is at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Cutler Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dennis Meyer officiating. Full military rites will follow. Interment will be in Patton Cemetery at a later time.

Visitation is from 1 p.m. until the funeral Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Grys was born July 11, 1937, in East Chicago, Ind., to John and Jean (Szymaszek) Grys. He married Janice Connor, who preceded him in death. On Nov. 5, 1966, in LaPorte, he married Beverly Ann Kegebein, who survives.

Survivors also include two daughters, Teresa (Kenneth) Paxson and Tammy (Dan) Withee, all of LaPorte; three sons, Robert (Carole) Johnson, Indianapolis, Mark (Gail Rae) Johnson, LaPorte, and Mike (Kelly) Grys, Portland, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dolores Kalita, Michigan City, and Julie Jones, LaPorte; and one brother, Raymond Johnson, Michigan City.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Grys retired as a pipe fitter from Local 597 after 28 years.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, a member of the Babe Ruth Association, a Babe Ruth baseball coach and the originator of the Babe Ruth Chester Grys Mental Attitude Award. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, sewing, coaching and spending time with his family. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and a recipient of the Richard G. Lugar Veteran's Award.

Memorials may be made to Bethany Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Association.
