Dan Martin , 56 years old of La Porte, IN, died Monday, November 7, 2011. He was born April 2, 1955 to John and Joan Martin. Dan grew up in LaPorte where he attended LPHS. Dan went on to join the Army, receiving an honorable discharge in 1974. Dan then settled in Edwardsburg, Michigan and Elkhart for many years where he worked as a welder. Dan was known by many friends and family as a "jack of all trades" and was called upon many times to help with carpentry, electrical and automotive work by family and friends. He was always there to lend a hand, never expecting anything in return. Dan was a giver. In October 2010, Dan moved to the Veterans Home in LaFayette, Indiana, as his illness progressed, he lived there until his death. While there, Dan was once again the "fix it" guy. He became great friends with Ike, whom the family thanks for his friendship to our brother. Dan came home frequently for visits and enjoyed being "home" but it eventually came that the Veterans Home was his "home". He was happy there.
Dan is survived by one son: Andrew Martin of Elkhart; his ex-wife, friend, and mother of his son: Mary Walter Danner. Dan is also survived by 3 sisters with whom he had a very close relationship: Marilyn (James) Selke of Michigan City, Fay (Milton) McCoy, and Lisa (Heath) Haferkamp, both of LaPorte; numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.
He was preceeded in death by his mother: Joan Timm; step father David Timm; and grandparents: Warren and Marion Curtis.
There will be a Celebration of Life Memorial Service on Friday, November 11, 2011 at 7PM at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Service. There will be a time of visitation with the family at 4PM until the time of the service. Interment will be held privately at a later date with full Military Honors.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Indiana Veterans Home, where they took such good care of Dan or to the LaPorte County Small Animal Shelter, as Dan was an animal lover.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Carla, Kayne, and Elmer at the Veterans Home for all they have done for Dan.
