Delbert August Major, 95, of La Porte, passed away on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at Franciscan Communities Hospice.
Delbert was born in La Porte, IN, on January 8, 1921 to Edward C. and Johanna C. (Wellhouse) Major.
On August 2, 1958 in La Porte, IN, he married Frances L. Beemon who preceded him in death in 2012. Surviving are his beloved children, Edward D. Major of Corpus Christi, TX, Delbert A. Major, Jr. of La Porte, Brett (Deborah) Major of Sycamore, OH, and Jonathan (Claudia) Major of San Diego, CA; daughter, Rea Jo Tonachio of Kingston, TN; and 6 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Frances Major; daughter-in-law, Dianna Major; 1 sister, Doris Frank; 1 brother, Donald Major; and 1 great-grandchild.
Delbert served our country honorably as a Submarine Navy Veteran in WWII. He was owner and operator of Major's Marathon on Lincolnway, then he worked in maintenance at IU Health La Porte Hospital, where he retired. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in La Porte, VFW Post#1130, Gypsy Rovers P.V. Hospital retiree, Boy Scout Leader for 20 years, and the over 40 dance group.
A cremation committal has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 4 PM on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Pastor Jo Ellyn Chadwick officiating. Full military honors will be conducted.
A time of visitation will be held from 3 PM until the time of service on Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will take place at a later date at a National Cemetery.
