Doris Major

September 25, 1932 — December 22, 2016

Doris Jean Major was born September 25, 1932 to Vernice (Pete) Seitz and Mabel (Renfro) Seitz. She was born in La Porte, IN, and lived there until she was ten. The Seitz family moved to Mill Creek where she lived for more than sixty years. She married Donald Henry Major on May 9, 1953, and was married for 63 years; he recently preceded her in death.
Doris is survived by her sisters, Lily Mae Krueger (Gordon), Janet Fowler-Sult (Delbert), both of Mill Creek, and Carol Sanderson (David), and one brother, William (Virginia) Seitz, both of La Porte. One sister, Mary Jane Magley (Elmer) preceded her in death. She is survived by her son, Douglas of New Carlisle and her daughter, Diane of Plant City, FL.
She is also survived by two grandsons, Chase Martin of Indianapolis and Shane Martin of Mill Creek and one granddaughter, Gina Major of Michigan City. She is survived by four great-grandchildren, Chase Martin, Jr. and Timothy Martin of Orlando, FL, and Deborah and Rachel Martin of Indianapolis.
Doris graduated from Mill Creek High School and was a homemaker. Later, she worked for many years at the La Porte County Assessor's office until her retirement. She was a homemaker, seamstress, and excellent cook. She was an avid shopper who loved to find a bargain. She made beautiful paintings of ships, animals, and scenery.
She loved to dress up and prepare for long evenings out with her husband sometimes going square dancing but always having fun. She loved to travel and enjoyed seeing all fifty of the United States and much of Western Europe. She was an American and proud of it. She was always interested in politics and what was going on in the world.
After retirement, she lived in Bartow, FL, for ten years before returning to her roots to live at Hamilton Grove in New Carlisle and Brentwood in La Porte. She became a member of the First United Methodist Church of La Porte when she married Donald and was always proud of her membership there. She loved flowers and grew tulips and begonias. No one was a stranger to her. She was outgoing and made friends easily, but it was her family that she loved the most.
