Dorothy Bard, 91, of Portland, Oregon, passed away on Monday, October 16, 2006, at her home, following a stroke.
A service of thanksgiving for her life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, October 20, at Cutler Funeral Home, LaPorte, with Rev. Frank Endes officiating. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery.
Dorothy was born July 30, 1915, in Indianapolis, IN to Lloyd R. and Edna (Moore) Echard. On January 1, 1937, in Valparaiso, IN, she married William S. Bard, Sr. who preceded her in death in 1967.
Survivors include daughter Dorothy Jane Jones of LaPorte, IN; son William S. Bard, Jr. of Portland; and grandson Ryan S. Burke.
Dorothy was a proud graduate of the University of Chicago, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1937. Following her marriage, she was a long time resident of LaPorte, raising her children and assisting her husband's business endeavors. She also taught middle school science until her retirement from the LaPorte Community Schools in 1973. She then spent several years in Florida, before moving to Huston, TX in 1990 to her son's home. In Houston, she taught English as a second language to adults through the public library. In 2002, the entire household relocated to Portland, OR where she was an active member of the Trinity Place Adult Daycare group and enjoyed many trips to the ocean and the Columbia River Gorge.
