Dorothy Pauline Payne, 89 years old, a resident of Golden Living Centers in LaPorte, Indiana passed away on January 16, 2013. Mother was born on April 17, 1923 in LaPorte, IN, to Paul and Mary (May) Harris, and was preceded in death by half-sister, Vaneta Thormeyer and survived by her dear sister, Edith Helen Dorman who resides in Winchester, TN. As a young girl out of high school on September 25, 1943, mother married the love of her life, Orville Payne who preceded her in death on March 26, 2006. From their wonderful 60 plus years of marriage were born two sons, Kyle (Catherine) Payne who reside in South Bend, IN and Bruce (Barbara) Payne who reside in Mill Creek, IN. She is also survived by five grandchildren, David (Molly) Payne, Jennifer (Brian) Lambert, Barbara Joline (Brandon) Smith, Weston (Maggie) Payne, and Nicholas Payne, the world traveler in the family; nine great grandchildren, several of whom have brought her great joy and fulfillment, as well as numerous nephews and nieces in many different locales, among them Kimberly Scheuer of Pegram, TN, Cynthia Collins of Marietta, Georgia, and Thomas Dorman of Las Vegas, NV. She was also blessed with many other family member too numerous to mention in this missive. Though Mother spent most of her life as a resident of LaPorte, and always saw her mission as that of "Homemaker", upon moving to Milwaukee, WI, in the mid 60's, she became an accomplished legal secretary for a law firm in that area. Upon returning to LaPorte in the late 1960's she again became a homemaker whose greatest gift was always to act as a positive and calming influence on many of her family members. In no uncertain terms, in her world, others always came first and she soon became something of a 2nd mother to Catherine, the wife of her eldest son. Mother was a quiet woman who will be remembered by those who love her, as a generous and giving person who embodied the best Christian traits of being wife, mother, and friend. She will be forever missed and mourned by all of us who loved her.
Funeral Arrangements have been entrusted to Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center in LaPorte, IN. There will be no formal visitation or public service and cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held at a later time at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Mishawaka, IN, celebrating Mother's life, to be followed by interment in Pine Lake Cemetery next to her beloved husband, Orville.
