Edgar Carl Gustafson

June 19, 1910 — December 10, 2002

Edgar Carl Gustafson, 92, Phoenix, died Dec. 10, 2002, at his home.

His cremains will be buried at a graveside service at 11 a.m. Monday in Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte. Cutler Funeral Home is handling local arrangements.

He was born June 19, 1910, in LaPorte, to William and Hedvig (Larson) Gustafson. His first wife, Laura, died in Phoenix in 1971. In 1972, he married Eleanor Melgreen, who survives.

Survivors also include one daughter, Judy (Carl) Craft, Grayling, Mich.; one brother, Robert (Jeannette) Gustafson, LaPorte; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two stepsons, Frank (Julia) Melgreen, Springfield, Ill., and Dennis (Claire) Melgreen, San Diego; one stepdaughter, Leandra Lewis, Phoenix; seven stepgrandchildren; and two great-stepgrandchildren.

Mr. Gustafson was a retired Arizona Republic and Phoenix Gazette employee who pioneered in computerized newspaper production. Retired in 1975, his newspaper career of 60 years started at the age of 15 when he was employed by the Herald Argus in LaPorte. He went to Phoenix to join the Republic and Gazette in 1952, where he helped to make the transition form the mechanical to the computer era of typesetting and printing production. Mr. Gustafson also was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran.
