Elizabeth J. Amos, 100, of La Porte, passed away on Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at IU Health La Porte Hospital.
Elizabeth was born in La Porte, IN on July 2, 1915 to Dr. Forrest E. and Jessie (Reed) Freeman.
On June 6, 1951 in La Porte, IN, she married John L. Amos who preceded her in death in 1987. Surviving are her daughter, Kathleen J. Myers, Ph.D., of Oceanside, CA; brother, James Monroe Freeman of McKinleyville, CA; 6 nieces and 1 nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Libby was a life member of the American Contract Bridge League and was active in the local duplicate club, the Presbyterian Church and its Dinner Club, Four Seasons Gardeners Club, Indiana Retired Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, YMCA Water Aerobics Class (the Water Buffaloes), Silver Sneakers and Silver Splash, and the Indiana State Teachers Association. She was a charter member of the La Porte chapter of the American Federation of Teachers and a charter member of the First Trust Federal Credit Union. Libby graduated from La Porte High School, received a bachelor’s degree from Hanover College, and a master’s degree in library science from Case Western Reserve University. She taught English for 7th and 8th graders and was later the school librarian (at Central, Boston, and Kesling schools) from 1937-1980. In 1949-1950, she was an exchange teacher to Belfast, North Ireland and at that time she was presented to the Queen of England. Libby liked Broadway plays and the Little Theater and did lots of traveling. She loved to play bridge and practice yoga. She and her husband were both Life Masters in contract bridge. Libby just celebrated her 100th birthday on July 2nd (proclaimed by the mayor as Libby Amos Day in La Porte) and had a party with over 100 of her friends and family in attendance. Libby's smile and warmth will be missed by all who knew her.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 AM on Monday, November 30, 2015 at the Presbyterian Church. A time of visitation will be held Sunday from 4-6 PM at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center and also from 10 AM until the time of the service on Monday at the church. Interment will take place at the Presbyterian Church, La Porte.
