Evalyn Rowley

March 20, 1924 — October 27, 2008

Evalyn Lois Rowley lost her battle to cancer Monday, October 27, 2008. She was at home with her family. She was born March 20, 1924 in Cherryvale, Kansas to Herbert Eberhardt Teter and Pansy Cunningham Teter, both of whom preceded her in death. She married George S. Rowley on October 30, 1953, who also preceded her in death in 1967. Her loving companion, Don Dudas, was with her for many years and provided constant support.

Surviving are three children: David G. Rowley (Susan) of Bristol, Indiana, Susan M. Havens of San Diego, California, and Stephen G. Rowley, Ph.D. (Kishiko Oguri) of Belmont, Massachusetts. She also has four grandchildren: Chris Havens (Robin) of LaPorte, Juli Havens Verkler of San Diego, California, George S. Rowley (Bonnie) of South Bend and Duane D. Rowley (Sarah) of Mishawaka, Indiana, and two great grandchildren, who are also in South Bend.

Evalyn had a passion for learning. She had a B.S. Degree from Indiana University and Masters degrees from both Indiana University and Purdue Universities. She taught as adjunct faculty at both schools while being a full time teacher of elementary children at Riley Elementary in LaPorte. She traveled extensively after retirement.

She was also active in the community, serving on the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army and the YMCA. She was secretary of the Woman’s Auxiliary of LaPorte Community Hospital and an officer of the Board for St. Paul’s United Church of Christ. She was an avid golfer and participated actively in many golfing arenas. Her handicap was enviable.

At Evalyn’s request a private family service will be held. For those friends wishing to remember Evalyn, in place of flowers, contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, 3240 Monroe Street, LaPorte, IN 46350 or the Charity of the Donor’s choice.
