Fred Salomon, 90, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, October 6, 2019 at the VNA Hospice Center in Valparaiso.
Fred was born on June 23, 1929 in Frankfurt, Germany.
Fred was a Holocaust Survivor. He was a member of the French Resistance during WWII and a member of The Palmach which was part of an elite fighting force of the Israeli Haganah. These forces assisted in fighting for Israeli's independence. In addition, Fred fought in the Arab-Israeli War of 1956.
On November 27, 1951 in Shave Zion, Israel, he married Haviva Baum. In December of 1961, he immigrated to the United States with his wife and children. He worked for Hedwin as a machinist for 25 years and before that he was a union carpenter.
Surviving are his wife, Haviva Salomon; children, Ilana Mrozinski, Amnon "Max" (Davida) Salomon, and Alon Salomon; 8 grandchildren, Adam (Melissa) Mrozinski, Ryan (Elisa) Mrozinski, Cammy (Mark) King, Michael Salomon, Jared Salomon, Alisha (Trevor) Flynn, Emily Salomon, and Benjamin Salomon; 7 great-grandchildren; 1 great, great-grandchild; sister, Edith Rodgers; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded by his mother; 2 brothers, Peter and Heinz; and son-in-law, Paul Mrozinski.
A funeral for Fred's close friends and family will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, October 8, 2019 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center. Burial will follow in the B'nai Zion Section at Patton Cemetery.
A time of visitation will be held from 1 pm until the time of the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.
