George W. Schmutte

January 23, 1937 — March 20, 2021

George W. Schmutte, 84, passed away on Saturday, March 20, 2021 at his home.

George was born on January 23,1937 in Indianapolis, IN, to George and Marie (Weimer) Schmutte.

On August 26, 1967, he married Sandra Taylor who survives.  Also surviving are his children, Angela Massarella of Tampa, FL and Jeffrey (Christine) Schmutte of La Porte; and 3 grandchildren, Austin, Lexy, and Sydney of Tampa, FL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Marie Schmutte.

George was a graduate of Cathedral High School and Marian College, Indianapolis.

George proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1958.  He was stationed in Oahu, Hawaii.  George was honorably discharged with a SP4 ranking.  Later, he was a manager at Roll Coater in Kingsbury for 24 years.  George retired from Whirlpool in La Porte.

When George and Sandy weren't attending food and art festivals, George enjoyed watching all kinds of sports, especially horse racing. He collected all of the Kentucky Derby commemorative glasses.

George was an excellent bowler and even bowled a perfect 300 on more than one occasion.  His name appears in the Bowling Hall of Fame.

George was a man of many admirable talents, including woodworking, and tackled almost all of his own home improvement projects.  He was also a talented and gifted writer.  Several of his poems were published in the Indianapolis Star, and was hired as a sports writer in New Palestine, IN.

George has left behind a legacy of love and respect.  He was a perfect example of how hard work, loyalty, faith, honesty, and kindness are precious in God's eyes.

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.
