Gerald Dean Kaufman , 83 years old of Walkerton (Fish Lake), Indiana, died 10:35 P.M. Tuesday, December 30, 2008 in LaPorte Hospital .
He was born January 31, 1925 in Johnson Township, Indiana, Son of the late Ray Kaufman and the late Esther Taylor Kaufman.
On June 9, 1951 in LaPorte, he married Kathryn Arney, who survives. Also surviving are his Son, Dave (Pam) Kaufman of Fish Lake , Daughter, Shelley (Tom) Kruse of Stillwell, Granddaughter, Katie Kruse of Stillwell, and Sister, Carolee Epperson of Portage.
He was preceded in death by His Parents.
He was a member of North Liberty Masonic Lodge; Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend; Orak Shrine, Michigan City; Tall Cedars of Lebenon, Michigan City; Bass Lake Shrine Club; Associate Member of the LaPorte F.O.P. and a member of the Walkerton United Methodist Church. He was one of the original members that helped to build and organize the Lincoln Township Volunteer Fire Department at Fish Lake. He was Trustee for Lincoln Township, LaPorte County from 1974-75. He was awarded The Meritorious Service Award by the Indiana Fire Marshalls Office for 35 years of service on August 31, 1991, as the last active charter member of the Lincoln Township Volunteer Fire Department. On May 16, 1998 he was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash Award from the State of Indiana.
He retired from Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO) in South Bend after 29 years of service. After which, he worked for the LaPorte County Highway Department and then for LaPorte Bearing.
Friends will be received from 3-8 P.M. Friday, January 2 and from 10-11 A.M. on Saturday, January 3 at the Cutler Funeral Home, 2900 Monroe Street, LaPorte, Indiana. A Memorial Service conducted by the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association will be held at 7 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. It will be followed by a Masonic Memorial Service at 7:30 P.M.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Cutler Funeral Home, Saturday, January 3, 2009 at 11A.M. with Rev Ronald Devenport and Pastor Charlene Harris Allen officiating.
Interment will follow in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Walkerton, Indiana.
