Gwendolyn Gracie, 95 years old of LaPorte , IN , passed away on Friday, November 18, 2011 at IU Health LaPorte Hospital.
She was born on April 25, 1916 in LaPorte, IN., Daughter of the late Arthur and Francis (Jones) Bowman.
She was married on April 26, 1941 in LaPorte to Edgar A. Gracie who preceded her in death on February 15, 1991.
Gwendolyn was the granddaughter of W.A. Jones who was a well knows collector of guns and other weapons that are on display at the LaPorte County Historical Museum . He also was the owner and builder of the historic Arbor Hill Bed & Breakfast in LaPorte. She received her BA from Depauw University and a Masters from Valparaiso University . She worked as teacher at Mill Creek and Rolling Praire and then went on to teach remedial reading at Critchfield until her retirement.
Surviving are her daughter, Shiela (Bill) Skinner of Belgrade, MT.; granddaughter, Dr.Wendy (Dr.Taylor) Handley of Boise, ID; 2 great grandsons, Jonas and Noah Handley.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edgar A. Gracie; brother, Arthur L. Bowman, Jr.; nephew, Terry Bowman, and a sister who passed away as a child, Cleo Bowman.
There will be a Celebration of Life Service at 12:00 PM Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at the Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 2900 Monroe Street, LaPorte, with Rev. Douglas Baker officiating. A time of visitation will be held from 3:00 to 6:00 PM Tuesday, November 22 at the Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
Internment will take place privately at Pine Lake Cemetery , LaPorte.
