Helen Canfield

Helen Lucille (Rhoade) Canfield, age 95, of La Porte, passed away on October 14, 2013 at IU Health LaPorte Hospital.

She was born in South Bend, IN on September 22, 1918 to Clayton Laverne and Vida Leah (Scholosser) Rhoade.

On September 12, 1943 she married Russell Canfield who passed away on March 4, 1978. She is survived by her beloved children, Barbara (Thom) Herrold of La Porte, Carolyn (Greg) Dadlow of La Porte; grandchildren, Thomas (Rhonda) Herrold II of La Porte, Michael (Allison) Herrold of Dallas, TX, Beth (Jeff) Kearney of New Hill, NC, Jennifer Dadlow of Indianapolis, Stephanie Dadlow of Fishers, IN; four great grandchildren; niece, Linda (Michael) DeMass of Mountain Home, AR; nephew, Larry (Susan) Yazel of La Porte; great nephew, Sam (Kim) DeMass of Bury St. Edmunds, England; and great niece, Ashley (Jonathan) Odom of Durham, NC.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Russell H. Canfield; sister, Evelyn Yazel; brother-in-law, Samuel Yazel; brother, Ronald Rhoade; and son-in-law, Thom Herrold.

Helen graduated from La Porte High School in 1936 and went on to receive her B.A. degree from MacMurray College in 1940 in Business Administration. She retired as business teacher and medical records secretary. Helen also worked as a bookkeeper at C.L. Rhoade Corp. She was a member of the La Porte Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women, Church Women United, Kitchen Home Extension Club (KIN), Volunteer income tax assistant, genealogy society, La Porte County Historical Society, the Woman's Auxiliary at La Porte Hospital, and Girl Scouts.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at La Porte Presbyterian Church with Rev. Sally Wicks officiating. A time of visitation with the family will be held from 10AM until the time of the service on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at the church. Burial has taken place at Bremen Cemetery, Bremen, IN.
