Helen Tom, 98, of LaPorte, Indiana, died at 2:50 p.m. on Monday, May 29, 2005 at Brentwood Assisted Living.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Cremation has taken place. Burial will be in Door Village Cemetery.
Helen was born August 8, 1907, in South Bend, Indiana to Rev. James H. and Clara (Gudhart) Rilling. On June 20, 1936, she married Meredith E. Tom who preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughter Jane T. Braziunas of Seattle, WA; son Alan R. Tom of Chapel Hill, SC; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a niece, Sylvia Unverzagt.
A brother, Walter Rilling preceded her in death.
Helen had lived in Union Mills from 1929 until 1957, moving to LaPorte for the remainder of her life. She graduated from Butler University where she served secretary of her senior class. She taught both Latin and social studies at Union Mills High School.
She was a member of the LaPorte Presbyterian Church where she had served as an elder. She was also a member of the LaPorte County T.B. Association, Women's Literary, Tri Kappa, the LaPorte Hospital Auxiliary and Questers.
Memorials may be made to the Meredith and Helen Tom Scholarship at Purdue University North Central or to the Meredith Tom Endowment Fund for the LaPorte Hospital Dental Clinic.
