Henry R. Mierlak, 80, LaPorte, died Saturday (June 7, 2003) at Porter Memorial Hospital, Valparaiso.
A private family service was held and cremation has taken place.
Mr. Mierlak was born Feb. 28, 1923, in Chicago, to Stanislaus and Joan (Bieda) Mierlak. On Jan. 22, 1942, in Chicago, he married Lillian Rowan, who survives in LaPorte.
Survivors also include one son, Henry J. Mierlak, Buchanan, Mich.; three grandchildren, Wendy Mierlak, Granger, Ind., Jill (Mike) Torrey, Mattawan, Mich., and Eric Mierlak, Kalamazoo, Mich.; one great-granddaughter, Alexandra Mierlak; one sister, Elizabeth Bette Cavallo, San Diego, Calif.; one niece, Johanna (Leonard) Srednick, Bolingbrook, Ill.; and two nephews, John Mierlak, Bolingbrook, and John Cavallo, San Diego.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Stanley, John and Ted Mierlak.
Mr. Mierlak had worked at Pullman Standard in Michigan City making railroad boxcars and then worked at and retired from Allis-Chalmers.
He moved from Chicago in 1956, finally settling in LaPorte in 1957. He wanted to get away from city life to grow things, raise animals and just farm. He played both the accordion and organ very well and played for family events.
