Howard Vernon Waters, 80, LaPorte, died of natural causes at 5:15 a.m. Friday (Feb. 6, 2004) at his home.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Cutler Funeral Home, LaPorte, with the Rev. David Young officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery with full military rites.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. until the service Monday at the funeral home.
He was born Aug. 8, 1923, in LaPorte to Robert E. and Adeline (Tieman) Waters. On Feb. 3, 1944, in LaPorte, he married Sherry Keel, who survives.
Survivors also include two daughters, Lynn Keel Waters, LaPorte, and Judith K. (Russell) Bernacchi, LaPorte; seven grandchildren, Becki Conner, Jeff Briggs, Tony Bernacchi, Julie Sinclair, Kris Lebo, Sarah Bernacchi and Amy Biernacki; 11 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Jeanette Hill, St. Louis, Mo.
Mr. Waters had served as Chief Deputy Sheriff, LaPorte County Auditor, vice president of First Federal Savings and Loan, was auditor of the Federal Home Loans Bank Board and had retired as a federal government liaison for the Indiana State Highway Department in 1992.
Mr. Waters was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church, LaPorte. He also belonged to the 463 GOP Republican Club, the American Legion, the F.O.P., the LaPorte Yacht Club, where he was a past commodore, and was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Mr. Waters formerly belonged to the Rotary Club. He was a first lieutenant during World War II. He attended William and Mary College.
