Ira. R. Abbott, Jr. age 81 of 1671 Willow Bend Dr., La Porte passed away Thurs. morning at Fountainview Terrace Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in La Porte. A Funeral Service will be held 4:00 PM (CST) Sunday at the Cutler Funeral Home, 2900 Monroe St., La Porte with Rev. Louis Schumm and Private Family Burial will be held on Monday at the Pine Lake Cemetery in La Porte. Visitation will be 4-7:00 PM Sat. & Sunday from 2:00(CST) until Services at the Cutler Funeral Home. Mr. Abbott was born June 3, 1924 in Champaign, Illinois to Ira R. & Ruth Stone Abbott. He was married June 18, 1949 in Decatur, IL. to Anne E. Shellabarger who survives. Also surviving are 4 sons: Dr. Ira "Rick" (Lainy) Abbott, III-Scarsdale, NY., James (Kathy) Abbott-Mishawaka, IN., William "Bill" Shellabarger Abbott-Ocala, FL., Christopher Mark Abbott-Los Angeles, CA., Dtr: Kathryn Anne (John) Lobato-Larkspur, CO., 6 Grandsons, Sister: Rosamond Clements-Sarona, WI., He Was preceded in death by 1 Sis: Miriam A. Trumpf, 2 Bros: Albert E. & Robert E. Abbott.

From 1949-1951 he worked at General Electric Co. Schenectady, NY, BTC in financial management, 1951-1965 for Ralston Purina Co. in Decatur, IL. and became plant superintendent, 1965-1967 Ralston Purina Co. in Omaha, Neb. As plant superindendant, 1968-1969 for Ralston Purina Co. in Lafayette, IN. as plant superintendent, 1969-1979 with American Home Foods in La Porte, IN as Engineering Manager, 1980-2006 with Nimet Industries in South Bend, IN. as Owner & CEO.

He was a 1942 Graduate of Decatur, IL. High School, 1943 he attended Univer. Of Illinois School of Engineering, 1949 Graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a BSEE, BSME, & BS degrees in Economics, in 1954 he received Professional Engineers License from Univer. Of Illinois. He was Past President of Decatur, Il. Rotary Club, Board Member of Decatur YMCA, Boy Scouts, & Decatur Club, Elder of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Decatur, IL., Elder of Dundee Presbyterian Church in Omaha, Neb., Elder of La Porte Presbyterian Church. He served in US Army Air Corps., during WW II with the 5th Army in North & Central Africa & Italy., where he received a Bronze Star

Ira loved his work. He particularly enjoyed the close relationship he held with the employees he worked with. Family was very important., not just his but the families of those he worked with were of mind first. Above all else, Ira was a gentleman. He respected others and expected the same of his family and of those he respected. He loved people who enjoyed life.
