Irwin "Irv" George Mellenthin, age 89, of La Porte, was called home by his Heavenly Father on April 19, 2014 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in La Porte, on October 15, 1924 to George and Laura (Munzel) Mellenthin.
On July 13, 1946 in La Porte, he married Frances "Fran" (Schumaker) Mellenthin who survives. Also surviving are his beloved daughters, Cathy (Herb) Hagenow of Rockford, MI, Lynn (Norm) Daniel of Coloma, MI; 6 grandchildren, Andy (Char) Hagenow of Rockford, MI, Matt (Karen) Hagenow of Farragut, TN, Jason (Missi) Hagenow of Ravenna, MI, Jennifer (Bill) Klitchman of Coloma, MI, Nikki (Kevin) Needham of Coloma, MI, Courtney (Ken) Fisk of Howard City, MI; 10 great grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; 8 step great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Marilyn (Gene) Burrows, and Dolores (Bob) Keller.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother and father in-law, Harold and Evelyn Schumaker; and son-in-law, Chet Schlipp.
Irv was a graduate of La Porte High School and Valparaiso University where he received his BA in Business Administration. He served in the US Navy aboard the LST-452 in the South Pacific from 1942-1946, where he honorably received the Purple Heart. Irv was Division VP in the Parts Distribution Center upon his retirement from Whirlpool, after a 32 year career. He was a member of the La Porte Industrial Coalition, La Porte Hospital Board of Directors, La Porte Bank and Trust Company Board of Directors, YMCA Board of Directors and was President of the Greater La Porte County Chamber of Commerce. Irv was also a Western Senior Golf Association member, and a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at St. John's Lutheran Church. A time of visitation will be held from 5-8 PM on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center and also from 10 AM until the time of the service on Thursday at the Church. Burial will follow the service Thursday at St. Johns Cemetery.
