Jack Volney Lay, 93 years old of La Porte, IN, died at 11:30 AM, Thursday, November 3, 2011 at his home.


He was born September 11, 1918 in LaPorte, son of the late Volney and Louise Patterson Lay.


On September 11, 1948 in LaPorte, he married Marion M. Bowers who preceded him in death on June 27, 2004. Then, on April 3, 2010 in LaPorte, he married Phyllis Bond Bowden, who survives.


Also surviving are his daughter, Karen Beth (William "Bo") Drake, Jr. of Lincolnshire, IL; sons, Thomas J. Lay of LaPorte, and David L. (Joyce) Lay of Rome, GA; 5 grandchildren, Kristen Garrison, Brett Garrison, David Drake, Brandon Lay, Jessica Thomas, and Great Grandson, James Ryder Thomas.


He was also preceded in death by his brother, James Lay.


Jack graduated from LaPorte High School in 1936 and attended Purdue University at Lafayette; an Army Veteran of WWII receiving the Bronze Star for distinguished bravery at the Battle of the Bulge; member of the Presbyterian Church of LaPorte, Elks, Rotary, United Way, Chamber of Commerce, LaPorte Masonic Lodge, and the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge. In 1926 Volney Lay founded Lay Trucking Co., Inc. He managed the company until after WW II at which time Jack joined him and eventually took over as the owner and president of Lay Trucking. In 2003 Jack retired and his son, David, took over the business. Today, Lay Trucking remains in operation and is celebrating its 85th Anniversary.


Friends will be received for visitation on Thursday, November 10 from 4-7 PM and on Friday from 10 - 11 AM at the Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 2900 Monroe Street, LaPorte.


A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 AM, Friday, November 11 at the Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Service, with Rev. Sally Wicks officiating.


Interment will follow in the Pine Lake Cemetery, with full military honors provided by the LaPorte Honor Guard.
