James Byron Bailey of La Porte, Indiana passed away on Friday, January 2, 2015 at the age of 91.
James was born in LaPorte on March 18, 1923, the son of James and Onie (Brown) Bailey. James served in the United States Army during WWII, serving in combat and fighting at the Battle of the Bulge. He returned to LaPorte after the war and worked at Allis Chalmers, Modine Manufacturing and finally retired as a custodian at La Porte High School. He was a member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars and affiliated with The Way International ministry.
James was preceded in death by his parents, six siblings, two sons, and his first wife of 35 years, Mary Ellen. He is survived by his second wife of 26 years Louise (Pate) Bailey, his son, Robert Bailey of Michigan City, IN., his nephew, Gordon (Lillie) Welch of Detroit, MI., his niece, Jayme (James) Staggers, La Porte, IN., his stepdaughters, Mary Fincher of Jackson, MS., and Ericka (Chris) Porter, Portland, OR. and his stepson, Richard (Kris) Pate of La Porte, IN. James’s legacy also includes numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center on Friday, January 9, 2014 at 11 AM officiated by Reverend David Chavoustie, Indianapolis, IN. Visitation will be held from 10 AM until the time of service at the Cutler funeral home.
Charitable contributions in James’ honor may be made to United Way of La Porte County or The Salvation Army of La Porte.
