James Carl Schultz, 69, of La Porte, Indiana died at VNA Hospice in Valparaiso on January 29, 2019.
James was born in La Porte, Indiana to the late George and Nylla Eloa Schultz (Zahn). He was the youngest of three boys. He graduated from La Porte High School in 1968. He attended Indiana University in Bloomingdale, Indiana.
He lived and worked in Terre Haute, Indiana for several years for General Telephone & Electric as a telephone lineman and manager. Jim returned to La Porte in the late 1990's and continued his work for the local telephone company which eventually became Verizon. He retired from Verizon after a lifelong career in the telecommunications industry.
Jim was an avid fan of Indiana University basketball. He enjoyed gardening and cooking. His technical skills led to many related hobbies. He raced gas powered remote control cars and built many small engines. He was a hi-fi audiophile and built audio gear as well as refurbished many pieces of vintage audio equipment, including tube amplifiers. He built more than one Tesla coil and Van de Graff generator. He loved all kinds of gadgets.
Jim spent many years caring for his mother so she could remain in her home in La Porte. He loved his cats. James was preceded in death by his father George, mother Nylla, and brother Terry. He is survived by his brother Thomas (Mary Ellen Segraves) of St. Charles, Illinois; sister-in-law Vida Ann of Orlando; nieces Heather (Arthur) Hernandez of Orlando, Florida and Kristin (Michael) Soukup of South Barrington, Illinois; James is also survived by great-nieces and a great-nephew: Lauren Mayhercy, and Karina and Parker Soukup.
Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 11 am (CT) on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 2900 Monroe Street, La Porte, Indiana, with Pastor Bob Vale officiating. Interment will take place following the service at Patton Cemetery.
A time of visitation will be at 10 am (CT) until the time of the service on Saturday at the funeral home.
