Mr. James "Jim" D. McEwen, 90, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away peacefully at his residence on October 26, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Known for his friendly demeanor, generosity, and handy skills, Jim was a pillar of strength and support for his family and the community.
Born on July 12, 1933, in Coolspring Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, Jim was the son of the late Claire and Kathryn (McCutcheon) McEwen. He was united in holy matrimony to his beloved wife, Donna Garts, on September 27, 1953. Their union was blessed with three daughters, Lori (Jeff) Holtfreter of Hendersonville, TN, Janet (Conrad) Hunter of Mooresville, NC, and Karen (Rick) Bridges of Westfield, IN.
Jim was a proud grandfather to Kali (Grant) Davis, James (JJ) Holtfreter, Jessica (Josh) Allen, Maddie (Max) Hunter-Bazin, Kristina (Kalup) Sandefur, and Adam Bridges. His joy multiplied with the addition of great-grandchildren, McEwen (Mac), Kellen, Hunter, Lily, Wilder, Charlie, Harper, Ruby, and Otis. He was also loved by many nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Donna; his parents, Claire and Kathryn McEwen; and his siblings, Blaine and Esther. He was a devoted family man who cherished every moment spent with his loved ones. His absence will be deeply felt by those who were fortunate enough to have known him.
Early on, Jim managed the family's dairy farm in western PA. After moving to La Porte, Jim served as a machine shop supervisor and utilized his woodworking skills renovating local homes and creating family heirlooms, demonstrating diligence and dedication in his professions. His abilities were widely recognized, and he was highly respected by his peers. Equally committed to his community, he was a member of The Presbyterian Church of La Porte and the Stillwell Lions Club, where he served past terms as President. He also held a past board presidency at a local credit union, contributing to his community's financial wellbeing.
Cremation has taken place under the care of Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center in La Porte.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service and burial will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2024 at The Presbyterian Church of La Porte.
Jim's memory will be cherished by all who knew him, not just as a loving family man but also as a generous friend and a helpful neighbor. His life was a testament to the power of kindness, generosity, and dedication to one's community.
