Janet Sue (Pennel) Mayes

Janet Sue Mayes, 83, passed away on Sunday, June 11, 2023 at her home, surrounded by family.

Janet was born on September 28, 1939 in Minneapolis, MN, to Reed and Violet (Crepes) Pennel.

On August 11, 1962 in Youngstown, OH, she married Jerry, who preceded her in death on September 23, 2022.  Surviving Janet are her two sons, Brian (Kimberly) Mayes of Carmel, IN and Kevin Mayes (Stacey Klibinski) of La Porte; granddaughter, Ashlyn Mayes of La Porte; great-grandchildren, Violet and Lincoln Mayes; sister-in-law, Sally Mayes; and nephews, James and David Mayes.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; great-grandson, Kazimierz Pienta; and sister, Judy Gibson.

Janet was the co-owner and nursery school teacher at Step Ahead Nursery School.  She was the treasurer for Alpha Chi Omega, as well as the Questers.  Janet was a member of, volunteer at, and served on the Board of Trustees at First United Methodist Church.  She was also a member of Tri Kappa.

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Gathering will take place on Saturday, June 17, 2023 from 1 - 4 p.m. at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.  Please wear casual attire.
