John Droege

February 4, 1917 — October 31, 2008

John F. Droege 91, of LaPorte, IN died October 31, 2008 at LaPorte Hospital. He was born February 4, 1917 in LaPorte, IN to the late Alvin and Henrietta (Sallwasser) Droege. On August 1, 1949 he married Eloise Zaring who preceded him in death.

He is survived by his children: Jean (Zach) Knickerbocker, Phil Droege, and Julie (Ed) Marshall all of LaPorte, IN. He had 7 grandchildren: Steve (Megan), Pete, Tim, Josh and Sarah Knickerbocker; Aron and Miles Droege; 2 great grandchildren: Elizabeth and Eve Marshall; 1 Brother: Charles (Peggy) Droege and 4 Nieces. John was preceded in death by his parents and 1 brother: Richard Droege.

Mr. Droege graduated from the University of Michigan in 1938 and Indiana University Law School. He served in the U.S. Army Intelligence in North Africa and Italy during WWII where he received the rank of Captain. He also served in Washington D.C. during the Korean War. He returned to LaPorte in 1952 and joined his brothers, Charles and Dick, in the Droege Clothing business. He was involved in Rotary Club, Kiwanis and Meals on Wheels. He loved gardening and was often featured in the Tri Kappa Garden Walk. John traveled extensively and loved learning about different cultures and history. He also enjoyed music and art.

There will be a Celebration of Life Service at 6 P.M. Sunday, November 2, 2008 at the Cutler Funeral Home with Rev. Kaaren Nesmith officiating. There will be a time of visitation from 3-6 P.M. on Sunday at the Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery at 10 A.M. on Monday, November 3, 2008 with Military Honors.
