John C. Hargrave, 91, LaPorte, died at 8:35 a.m. Thursday (Nov. 20, 2003) at LaPorte Hospital.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, in the LaPorte First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Doug Hadley officiating. A private family entombment will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, Michigan City. There will be no visitation. Cutler Funeral Home, LaPorte, handled arrangements.
He was born Dec. 12, 1911, in Jamestown, Ind., to the Rev. William L. and Suda (McFall) Hargrave. On Feb. 5, 1937, in Mt. Pleasant, Mich., he married Margaret Kumler, who died Sept. 30, 1993.
Survivors include two daughters, Susan (Richard) Hargrave Kent, Indianapolis, and Anne Hargrave Mund, Austin, Texas; one grandchild, Emily Lynn Mund, Austin, Texas; and one sister, Helen Schafer, Muncie, Ind.
Also preceding Mr. Hargrave in death were his twin brother, Frank A. Hargrave, who died Jan. 4, 1994, and two brothers, William and Richard.
Mr. Hargrave, along with his brother Frank, founded the general insurance firm, Hargrave, Hargrave & Boston, in 1939.
He attended DePauw University and graduated from Indiana University in 1935 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration. He was a professional member of Alpha Kappa Psi and an honorary member of Beta Gamma Sigma. He had been awarded the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) designation in 1942 by the American Society of Underwriters, of which he was a member.
Mr. Hargrave also was a lifetime honorary board member of the LaPorte YMCA and was a member of Kiwanis Club. He served as president and drive chairman of the United Fund of Greater LaPorte.
For the LaPorte County Chapter of the American National Red Cross, Mr. Hargrave was a lifetime director and served as chairman of the Indiana State Convention and on the Eastern Area Advisory Board for three years. From 1974 to 1976, Mr. Hargrave served as Chairman of the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission. He was a president and board member of the LaPorte Chapter of People to People International, served on the board of directors of LaPorte Bank & Trust and served as chairman of the LaPorte Economic Advancement Foundation.
Mr. Hargrave also was the founder, chairman and board member of the Planned Giving Council of LaPorte. He served as vice president, was an executive board member and was granted an honorary lifetime membership of the LaPorte Chamber of Commerce. He was a 50-year member of the Scottish Rite. He was awarded the Junior Chamber of Commerce's Annual Good Citizen's Award in 1961. Mr. Hargrave also was an active member of the LaPorte First United Methodist Church.
