John G. Martin, Jr

August 6, 1918 — February 26, 2005

John Gordon Martin, Jr. 86, of Marion, IN, died at 1:45 a.m. on Saturday, February 26, 2005 in the Bradner Village Health Care Center.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, at the Cutler Funeral Home with Dr. Andrew Schramm of Westminster Presbyterian Church officiating. Visitation is on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of services. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery.

John was born August 6, 1918, in Rochester, IN to John Gordon, Sr. and Mildred (Pfeiffer) Martin. At a young age, he moved with his family to LaPorte. He was married December 27, 1941 to Mary Ann McCarty; she preceded him in death in 1995. During their 54 years of marriage, they lived in South Bend where they raised their family.

John received a degree in engineering from Purdue University in 1941. Upon graduation, he went to work for the Bendix Corporation designing aircraft landing gear during the war years. Throughout his thirty-year career as an engineer with Bendix, John was responsible for a number of patents, receiving the Most Valuable patent Award in 1971. Following his retirement in 1973, he managed the Martin Farms located in Hope, N.D. and Rolling Prairie, IN.

John was a longtime member, trustee and elder of the First Presbyterian Church of South Bend, a member of Kiwanis, Orchard Hills Country Club in Buchanan, MI, and a student of the South Bend Conservatory of Art. He was also a Mason. During the years following his retirement he and Mary enjoyed traveling, playing golf, and spending time with family and their five grandchildren. He began painting watercolors during these years.

The Martin family would like to thank the staff of the Haven at Bradner Village for their kind and loving care during the six years he was a resident on the Alzheimer Unit.

John is survived by two sons: John David (Marjorie) Martin of Lafayette and Henry G. (Ginny) Martin of Marion, his grandchildren Andrew (Stephanie) Martin of St. Louis, MO, Christopher (Melissa) Martin of West Lafayette, Eric Martin of Indianapolis, Julie Martin of Norwalk, CT, and Sarah (Justin) Sperry of St. Louis, MO and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister Marianne (Rhys) Wagner of Bay Village, OH. His brother William Henry Martin died in 1945 in the Battle of Leyte Gulf during World War II.
