John Reid Provan, 82, of La Porte, passed away on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at Memorial Hospital of South Bend.
John was born in Liverpool, England, on January 18, 1934 to John Reid and Lilian (Leech) Provan.
On March 9, 1963 in Prescot, Lancashire, England , he married Sandra Lyon who survives. Also surviving are his beloved children, Helen (Christopher) Lehner of Camas, WA, Anna (Tom) Chatoney of Grapevine, TX, Iain (Alison) Provan of Zionsville, IN; grandchildren, Evan, Alison, Bennett, and Caroline Lehner, Brett and Kirk Chatoney, Gavin and Alaine Provan; brothers, Leonard (Patricia) Provan of England, Graham (Ann) Provan of France, Alan (Susan) Provan of England; sisters, Charlotte (Bill) Cuthbertson of England, June (the late Roy) Strevens of Canada, and Hazel (Barry) Davies of England. He was preceded in death by his parents.
After serving an apprenticeship as a machinist, John became an engineer officer in the British Merchant Navy. When he left the sea he became a project engineer, and came to the U.S. in 1968 as general manager of Metelpel in Betterdorf, IA, He came to La Porte in 1973 as general manager of Celedyne in Michigan City, then joined Berkel Inc in 1977, becoming VP of Engineering and VP of Sales and Marketing. He formed his own business, Britparts Midwest in 1988, retiring in 2002.
John was a former member of the La Porte Rotary Club. He enjoyed golf, tennis, sailing, and cars, John sang in the choir and served as vestryman and treasurer for St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
A Requiem Mass will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, November 21, 2016 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. A time of visitation will be held from 4-7 PM on Sunday, November 20, 2016 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center.
