Kermit Horn

July 28, 1918 — October 29, 2005

Kermit Horn, 87, of LaPorte, Indiana, died at 4:55 a.m. on Saturday, October 29, 2005 at Countryside Place Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

A private family service will be held on Tuesday, November 1, at Pine Lake Cemetery, where military rites will be conducted. Rev. Doug Ohime will be officiating. There will be no visitation.

Kermit was born July 28, 1918, in Marsena, Arkansas to Otis & Stella (Jordan) Horn. On January 20, 1949, he married Phyllis M. Miller who survives.

Also surviving are daughters Dale J. (James, Jr.) Lehner of Battlecreek, MI and Darlene K. (Tom) Costello of LaPorte; grandchildren Lucas & Lore Lehner and Amanda Trumble; a great-grandson; and brother retired Col. Willard Horn of Albuquerque, NM.

His parents and a daughter, Lori Ann Horn, preceded him in death.

Kermit had retired from J. C. Penney after 44 years.

He was a US Army veteran of WW II where he was sent to Japan after the surrender to help set up a military government. He was a graduate of Henderson State Teachers College, which is now Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, AR. He was a Life Member of the LaPorte Kiwanis Club, past board chairman of the LaPorte YMCA, and a member of the LaPorte Elks Lodge. He also volunteered with the United Way, Meals on Wheels and the LaPorte Co. Council on Aging.

Memorials may be made to the LaPorte Salvation Army or LaPorte First Baptist Church.
