Louis William Schumm IV died on Friday, May 29 at Hamilton Grove Communities of New Carlisle, Indiana. Louis was a most beloved man in his community, a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan, born the same year as Mickey Mouse (1928) a fact which always delighted him.
For many years Louis was the caretaker of his mother and grandmother. As a young man, his father was disabled and died at an early age, leaving Louis the responsibility of his grandmother and mother until the latter's death.
He earned an MA in Economics from Purdue University. Louis began a new professional life as a minister after the death of his mother, having studied at McCormick seminary in Chicago. There, he married Mary Lou Dahn, a fellow seminarian. Unexpectedly, she died in her sleep a few weeks later.
Mary Lou's best friend Nan and Louis comforted one another and were married in May of 1990 in west Unity, Ohio, where Louis served as Minister of the First Presbyterian Church of West Unity for three years.
Louis embraced the LaPorte Community in many roles: as an employee of Allis Chalmers for many years, served on the Board of the Ruth Sabin Home and the Community Hospital for many years. Louis was also a member of the Kiwanis Club, an Elder, Deacon and Parish Visitor of the LaPorte Presbyterian Church. He is tenderly mourned by his wife Nan, two adult step children, a son-in-law, three grandchildren and many friends.
A Memorial Service celebrating Louis' life will be held at the LaPorte Presbyterian Church at a later date, to be announced. Burial will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family of Louis Schumm in c/o Cutler Funeral Home, 2900 Monroe Street, LaPorte, IN 46350.
