Merle was married on April 21, 2000 to Betty Jean Floyd Bannwart who survives.
Merle belonged to many organizations including the Michigan City and LaPorte Elks, Michigan City Moose, Rolling Prairie VFW, American Legion, 4-H, Republican Party, Sheriff's Pose, Percheron Draft Horse Association, 96th Infantry Division Association HQ Co 381st Inf. Where he received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star in the U.S. Army during WWII, and the Illinois State Stock Horse Association. He had been involved in Politics since the 1950's
