Paul H. Harrer, 89, of Hamilton Communities, New Carlislse, IN, died at 9:30 p.m., Thursday, September 2, 2004 at his home.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 11, 2004 at the LaPorte Presbyterian Church with Rev. David Gibbs and Rev. Ronald Allin officiating.
Mr. Harrer was born January 25, 1915 in Belgrade, Montana to Henry & Rosa (Talbott) Harrer. On September 10, 1939, in Flint, Michigan, he married Dorothy Haverfield, who survives.
Also surviving are daughters Patricia (Jack) Frazier, South Bend, IN and Kay (Paul) VanWijk, Salmo, British Columbia; son, James (Patty) Harrer, Elgin, IL; 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by 2 sisters and 3 brothers.
He graduated from Montana State University, Bozeman, in 1938 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi and Phi Kappa Phi, Engineering and Academics honoraries. He was a life member of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers and Automotive Engineers for 15 years. He was a registered Professional Engineer in Indiana. He was an active member of the Presbyterian Church, served on the Community Hospital Board for 6 years, 1 year as chairman and was a volunteer driver for Meals-on-Wheels.
Mr. Harrer spent all of his working years with Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. going from student engineer to product engineer to manager of engineering. Twenty-five U.S. and several foreign patents were issued to him during those years. For 10 years he was the Allis-Chalmers representative on the Engineering Advisory Committee for the Farm and Industrial Equipment Institute which is responsible for American Standards in farm equipment for the U.S. and Canada. He served as an Agricultural Engineer Consultant for several years after retiring from Allis-Chalmers in 1979 after 41 years of service.
Memorials may be made to the LaPorte Presbyterian Church, LaPorte Meals-on-Wheels or St. Labre Indian School in Ashland, Montana.
