Paul M. Rumely

February 23, 1945 — January 19, 2005

Paul Meinrad Rumely, a LaPorte native and an executive in human resources for three Fortune 500 corporations, passed away on January 19, 2005 at age 59. The cause of death was cancer, according to his wife of 31 years, Antoinette D'Andria Rumely.

Paul was born in Chicago, IL on February 23, 1945, to A.J. and Frances (Murphy) Rumely, Jr. A.J. Rumely served as Mayor in LaPorte 1979-1982.

He graduated from LaPorte High School in LaPorte, IN in 1963 and then graduated from Georgetown University with a Degree in Economics in 1967. After Georgetown, he attended Indiana University School of Law and then taught government, economics and French at La Lumiere School in LaPorte for three years before attending Tulane University where he earned a Masters in Business Administration in 1973.

In 1973, Paul began his professional career in New York, having been recruited from Tulane by Citibank, then moved to Amerada Hess in the oil industry, where he advanced to Manager, Employee Relations for Refining and Marketing.

In 1984, he became Vice President of Human Resources at General Reinsurance, then a $10 billion firm. He served as head of Human Resources for five years before becoming head of Human Resources at Prudential Securities. Thereafter, he moved to become head of Human Resources at Moody's Investors Services and he served in that capacity form 1990 until 2000.

After 16 years as heads of Human Resources at three major firms, he started his own consulting and coaching firm, Rumely Consulting, and started teaching at Cornell University (School of Industrial and Labor Relations, Human Resources Program). This activity he had been doing for the past 4 years.

Besides his wife, he is also survived by his two daughters, Maria 26, and Leah, 21, both of New York City. He leaves behind six brothers and sisters, Peter Rumely of South Bend, IN, Marti Kuehn of Evanston, IL, Dr. Marge FitzGerald of Louisville, KY, Rose Thomas of Evanston, IL, John Rumely of New York City, NY and Frances Jones of LaPorte, IN, their spouses and 23 nieces and nephews.

He served on the Board of the Aldrich Society at Tulane University's Freeman of Business, the Board of the New York Urban League and the Board of Advisors, Cornell University, School of Industrial and Labor Relations (Human Resources Studies Program).

He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in New York City and St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church in Avon, New Jersey.

A funeral mass will be held at 1:00 p.m. CST January 27, 2005 at St. Peter Catholic Church in LaPorte. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery in LaPorte.
