Raymond "Ray" Lloyd Downey, 71, of North Liberty, IN, passed away with family by his side, on Sunday, May 28, 2023 at Memorial Hospital of South Bend.
Ray was born on November 23, 1951, in La Porte, IN, to Daro and Evelyn (Crosby) Downey. He was the youngest of 3 children. Ray had 3 half-brothers, as well.
Ray graduated from Concord High School in Elkhart and later joined the United States Marine Corps. After 12 years of service, he was discharged from the Marines, where he did a few different jobs, and then settled with Carpenters Local 1485. In the Carpenters Local 1485, he worked as a Journeyman Carpenter doing bridgework and various carpentry jobs. Ray retired as a Journeyman Carpenter after 20+ years.
He was an outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. Ray went on many hunting trips, hunting whitetail deer and bears. His favorite places to hunt were Wyoming and New Mexico. Ray enjoyed spending time with his family and friends as well.
Ray was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Evelyn (Crosby) & Raymond Heminger; father and stepmother, Daro & Marjorie Ann (Fasel) Downey; brothers, Louis Downey, Charlie Pointon, Dennis Downey, and Leonard Downey; and nephew, Richard Downey.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jeremy & Sheri Blocher; brother and sister-in-law, Chester & Jean Downey; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2023 from 2 - 5 p.m. (EST), at the VFW Post 1954, 66992 Tamarack Rd., North Liberty, IN 46554. At 3 p.m., there will be an honor guard presentation, including a 21-gun salute.
