Richard Tolive Buckingham, 84, LaPorte, died at 11:45 p.m. Monday (Aug. 18, 2003) at his home.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Cutler Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dennis Meyer officiating. Interment will be in Black Hills National Veteran's Cemetery, Sturgis, S.D. There will be no visitation.
He was born Sept. 24, 1918, in Caputa, S.D., to George and Ida (Jensen) Buckingham. On March 18, 1939, in McIntosh, S.D., he married Ione A. Nelson, who survives in LaPorte.
Survivors also include one daughter, Marilyn Kay Buckingham, Des Moines, Iowa; one son, Gary R. Buckingham, Sacramento, Calif.; and two brothers, John H. Buckingham, Oxford, Ohio, and William H. Buckingham, Spokane, Wash.
Also preceding Mr. Buckingham in death were two sisters, Catherine Novy and Marie Vallas; five brothers, Edward, Howard and Ray Buckingham, George Bud and Charles Peter Collins.
Mr. Buckingham had worked as a registered land surveyor. He was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church. Mr. Buckingham was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 659th Field Artillery. He also was a Korean War veteran, serving in the 76th Field Artillery. He was the past commander of the American Legion Brattvet-Green Post 66 of Lemmon, S.D. Mr. Buckingham also was a member of the American Legion Post 83 of LaPorte and was a LaPorte Hospital Auxiliary member and volunteer and was a member of the LaPorte Kiwanis Club. Mr. Buckingham was a 1937 graduate of Rapid City High School in South Dakota.
