Robert F. Burns

August 23, 1908 — April 7, 2005

Robert F Burns, 96, of LaPorte, Indiana, died at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, 2005 at LaPorte Hospital.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 12, at Cutler Funeral Home with Rev. Doug Hadley officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services. Burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery Mausoleum in South Bend, Indiana.

Robert was born August 23, 1908, in Montpelier, IN to Patrick & Clara (Greenfield) Burns. On June 6, 1943, he married Myrtle S. Swanson, who preceded him in death August 26, 1994.

Survivors include sisters Mrs. Barbra Barnett of Indianapolis, IN and Mrs. Sally Kay of Melbourne, FL; special care-givers, nephew Mike Burns of LaPorte and niece Mrs. Lisa Bishop of Kanata, Ontario.

Robert had been an elementary school teacher, a basketball coach, a machinist at Bendix, an assistant Professor of Law at the University of Notre Dame, a personnel manager at Yale & Town in Connecticut and at Whirlpool in LaPorte. He also was an attorney for 32 years, retiring in 2001.

He was a member of Montpelier Lodge 600 F&AM, a 32° York Rite and a LaPorte Lions Club past president. He was a member of LaPorte United Way, the LaPorte County Bar, the City of LaPorte Bar, the Indiana State Bar Association, the Whirlpool Management Club, the LaPorte County Historical Society, and the Ball State University Foundation in which he assisted in founding. He was a member of the LaPorte County Pioneer Cemetery Association, writing the Pioneer Cemetery Association Enabling Act. He attended Ball State University and graduated from Indiana University with a Masters of History. He earned his Juris Prudence degree at the University of Notre Dame in 1947.
