Robert Lee Childress, 90, of La Porte, passed away on Thursday, March 18, 2021 at his home, surrounded by his family.
Robert was born on March 18, 1931 in Paradise, KY, to Everett Lee and Cynthia (Mason) Childress.
On October 3, 1954 in La Porte, IN, he married Gloria May Scholz who survives. Also surviving are his children, Scott (Susan) Childress of La Porte, Alan (Julie) Childress of La Porte, Paul (Carol) Childress of Porter, and Carol (Ronald) Hahn of Chicago, IL; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded by his parents, 3 sisters, and 1 brother.
Robert proudly served as a Corporal in the U.S. Army from July 1952 to June 1954.
Robert was a millwright for many years at Bethlehem Steel. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and gardening. Robert was a baseball fan, especially of the White Sox. He was a Scout Master and a Little League coach.
Robert will be fondly remembered as a loving husband and great father. He always made time for those he loved.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 24, 2021 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Pastor Ronald Brauer Jr. officiating. Burial with Full Military Honors will follow at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.
A time of visitation will be held from 4 - 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center and from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Due to the recent Governor's Order, anyone attending the visitation and/or service is required to wear a mask.
Memorial donations may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 111 Kingsbury Ave,. La Porte, IN 46350.
