Robert Johnson, 85, of LaPorte, Indiana, died at 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2006 at LaPorte Hospital.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. CST on Wednesday, January 25, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church with Rev. Dr. James Jones officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. where full military rites will be conducted.
Robert was born July 22, 1920, in LaPorte to the late Roy C. & Helena (Wendt) Johnson. In 1948, in Lafayette, Indiana, he married Doris Marie Dales, who survives.
He is also survived by daughter Jan Carol (Gordon) Dyer of Picayune, MS; son Dale Ross (Pat) Johnson of LaCombe, LA; and grandchildren Christopher Dyer of Slidell, LA, Carolyn Christoffersen of Nashville, TN and Danielle Johnson of LaCombe.
Robert had been an educator, coach and athletic director at the University of Southern Illinois, in Carbondale, and had been at Beech Grove High, Beech Grove, Indiana for 37 years.
He had graduated from Depauw University, Greencastle, IN, with a bachelor's degree and form Indiana University with master's and directorate degrees. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the American Legion, the LaPorte Baseball Old Timers Hall of Fame, the Indiana State Teachers Association, the Interscholastic Athletic Administration and the Indiana Coaches Association. He had played ball for the Rocky Mountain North Carolina Plains League. He was also a WW II veteran, serving in the Army Air Corps.
