Robert Lee Smith Sr., 70, LaPorte, died at 11:15 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 23, 2003) at his home of natural causes.
A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Monday (Oct. 27, 2003) at Countryside Christian Church, Michigan City, with the Rev. Rick Jones officiating. A private family interment will be held in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, Michigan City. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until the service Monday at the church.

He was born June 8, 1933, in Lima, Ohio, to Lester Lee and Alice Bernadine (Wade) Smith. On Nov. 6, 1953, in Lima, he married Eulalah V. Stevenson, who survives.
Survivors also include one daughter, Jennifer L. (Raymond C.) Gress, Allendale, Mich.; two sons, Robert L. Smith Jr., Portland, Ore., and Gregory S. Smith, Michigan City; two granddaughters, Tyesha (Curtis) Thaler, Middleville, Mich., and Lyndsey Gress, Allendale, Mich.; one great-grandson, Matthias Thaler, Middleville, Mich.; one sister, Rachel Thomas, Bensenville, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Smith had retired from NIPSCO, having worked in human resources. He was a member of Countryside Christian Church, Michigan City, and served as an elder. He was heavily involved in many of the ministries within the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Countryside Christian Church.
