Robert "Bob" L. Spencer, age 84, of La Porte, passed away on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at IU Health La Porte Hospital.
He was born on November 14, 1931 in La Porte to George H. and Dorothy (Kistler) Spencer.
On January 14, 1956 in La Porte, he married Pauline Masterson who survives. Also surviving are his beloved children, Mike (Sherry) Spencer and Gayle Collette, both of La Porte; 5 grandchildren, Josh Freese, Stephanie Krone, Gregory Spencer, Alyssa Collette and Seth Spencer; 4 great-grandchildren; brother, William (Sharen) Spencer of Lowell; and two sisters, Nancy Bohlin of La Porte and Carol (Erik) Riise of Hobart.
He was preceded by his parents and sister, Barbara Hannon.
Bob was a member of The La Porte Presbyterian Church, the American Legion Post #83 and the Polish Falcons. He served in the US Army from 1952-1954. He was employed at Diedrich Drill in La Porte for 25 years as a computer programmer analyst and for Allis-Chalmers for 35 years as a computer programmer and materials manager until it closed in 1983.
He was an avid sports enthusiast, playing basketball and baseball all his school years and beyond on independent teams. He finally retired from playing sports at age 68. Bob enjoyed gardening and was well known for his tomato crop.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, June 23, 2016 at Agape Christian Church with Dr. Rodney Nielsen officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery.
A time of visitation will be held from 3 -7 pm on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center and from 10 am until the time of service on Thursday at the church.
