Ronald Lee "Ron" Cottrell, age 65, of La Porte, passed away on Monday, February 9, 2015 at IU Health La Porte Hospital in La Porte. Ron was born in Muskegon, MI, on May 2, 1949 to Frank Walthers and Eunice Violet (Knight) Cottrell. On January 17, 1986, he married Shelley Patterson who survives.
Also surviving are his beloved children, Mique (Dru) Buck of Osceola, IN, Jason Allen of LaPorte, IN, and Jamie Allen of St. Petersburg, FL; three grandsons, Dashon Woods of La Porte, Arun Buck, and Ryun Buck both of Osceola, IN; a sister, Carolyn Jones of Binghamton, NY; a sister-in-law, Nancy Cottrell of Kalamazoo, MI, a brother-in-law, Harry Geeting of Grand Rapids, MI; many nieces and nephews; and last but not least, his dog and best friend, Mosley Chesterfield Cottrell of La Porte, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, Patricia Geeting and Richard Cottrell.
Upon graduating from Freemont High School Ron served his country honorably in the United States Coast Guard from 1969-74. He eventually retired from Transit Mix in July of 2014 after 27 years of faithful service. He was a former volunteer fireman for Center Township Fire Department. Ron was also a member of the American Legion in La Porte and the "Gentleman's Coffee Club" at Louie's. He loved classic cars, going to car shows, and in 2014 he finally purchased his dream car, a 1971 "Heavy Chevy".
A cremation committal has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center.
A Graveside Memorial Service will take place on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 at 3:00 pm CST at Pine Lake Cemetery, La Porte, IN. Military Honors will be presented.
