Ruth E. Johnson, 96, LaPorte, died at 1:04 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 21, 2004) at Fountainview Terrace Nursing Home.
The funeral is at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethany Lutheran Church, LaPorte, with the Rev. Dennis Meyer officiating. Interment is in Carmel Cemetery, LaPorte. Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Cutler Funeral Home, LaPorte, and 10 a.m. until the service Tuesday at the church.
Mrs. Johnson was born July 21, 1907, in Chesterton to Swan and Thilda (Ryden) Johnson. On Nov. 28, 1929, she married Egbert J.D. Johnson, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are one son, Bruce Johnson, LaPorte; one granddaughter, Kathleen Wurtlin, LaPorte; one grandson, Ronald (Michelle) Johnson, LaPorte; and two great-grandchildren, Justin Wurtlin and Christin Johnson.
She was preceded in death by one son, Dale Johnson; four brothers, Arthur, Clarence, Carl and Norman; and four sisters, Lillian Palm, Myrtle Garwood, Freda Rosenow and Agnes Berg.
Mrs. Johnson's husband was the area's Marathon Oil Co. distributor. She helped manage the bulk plant office at Teegarden and Washington streets in LaPorte. She also served cider on weekends at Garwood Orchards for 20 years.
She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, where she was active with the Ladies Aid, Junior Mission Band, Sunday school, Carmel League, Lutheran Church Women and was past president of the Quilting Ladies for 28 years, the Altar Guild for 30 years and a member of the sanctuary choir for 53 years. She also organized the church's historical archives.
Mrs. Johnson and her husband were charter members of the Scipio Township Volunteer Fire Department. She was active with the auxiliary for 30 years. She was a member of the Kankakee Township Home Demonstration Club for 40 years. She organized and led the quilters at the Swanson Activity Center for Older Adults. She demonstrated quilting at several venues, including the LaPorte County Fair. She sang with the LaPorte County Choralaires Home Demonstration Chorus from 1926 to 1994. She traveled the U.S. and Canada with the Purdue University Glee Club. She was a performer and usher at LaPorte Little Theatre Club. She was a member of the People to People International and LaPorte County Historical Society.
