S. Dwight Handley
Born June 22, 1919, in LaPorte, Indiana, to Lottie Margaret Brackbill Handley and Harold Lowell Handley. He was schooled in the LaPorte School System & Indiana University School of Business 1938-1941. He was a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity.
Married Mary Susan Stull of Bloomington, IN, May 25, 1941. Born to them were Judith Susan Handley Hilbish (1942-1993) of LaPorte, IN, Richard Dwight Handley, M.D., of Tyler, TX, and the Reverend Dr. David Stull Handley of the Presbyterian Church (USA). He has seven grandchildren, Susan Hilbish Minniear, David Hilbish, Rachel Handley, Megan Handley, Derek Handley, Scott Handley, and Taylor Handley. He has seven great-grandchildren.
He served the Army Air Force as a bomber pilot of B17, B24, and B32 bombers during WW2. He served on Air Force bases in Nevada, California, Nebraska, Colorado, Arizona, and Texas, and was accompanied there by wife and daughter. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
Dwight first worked for Swift and Company in Marion, IN, and Lima, OH, then worked in LaPorte, IN, for Bastian-Morley Company as Advertising Manager. He served 1947 until retirement as salesman for Brown and Bigelow Remembrance Advertising Company, winning high honors in sales for 40 years, serving often as President of the President's Club.
He served as president of his La Porte Rotary Club 1961-1962. He founded the Rotary High School Career Day. Dwight served on the Salvation Army Board of Directors. He was active in his churches, LaPorte Presbyterian Church and Liberty Bible Church, Chesterton, IN. He taught Sunday school, served as an elder, and organized home Bible studies for Campus Crusade for Christ. He led Bible studies in the Indiana State Prison for 25 years for Prison Fellowship in Michigan City, IN.
His all-consuming hobbies were always travel, reading, and vacationing at the Handley Island on Lake Webster, North Webster, IN.
A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday July 31, 2010 at the Cutler Funeral Home with a reception to follow at the funeral home. Friends may leave condolences at www.cutlerfuneral.com
Dwight Handley moved to Tyler, TX, in 2007. He died June 2, 2010. He is survived by his wife Susan Handley and his two sons. Memorial service will be held in LaPorte, IN.
