Thomas Joseph Ferrara, Sr., 70, of La Porte, passed away on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at IU Health La Porte Hospital.

Thomas was born in Bronx, NY, on August 22, 1945 to Joseph and Margaret Janette Ferrara.

On May 18, 1968 in La Porte, IN, he married Joanna "Josie" (Jongkind) Ferrara who survives in La Porte. Also surviving are his beloved children, Thomas (Janette) Ferrara II of La Porte, Amy Ferrara of La Porte, Meg Ferrara (Matt) Johnson of South Bend, and Shelley Ferrara of La Porte; grandchildren, Trey, Christian, Teagan, Chloe, Claire, Charlie, Harper, Tyler, and Lola; sisters, Barbara Van Der Voort and Mary Hanretta; and brother, Tim Ferrara. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Thomas worked as a teacher and was Indiana Correctional Facilities Teacher of the year. He served honorably in the US Navy and Army National Guard. He enjoyed coin collecting, had a love of military history, and was a music aficionado. He was past President of the La Porte Chapter of the Jaycees.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 AM (CST) on Friday, January 22, 2016 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Pastor Kevin Galloway officiating. Burial with Full Military Honors will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery.

A time of visitation will be held from 3- 7 PM (CST) on Thursday, January 21, 2016 and from 10 AM until the time of service at the funeral home on Friday.
